Wing Gundam Ver.te by Tekka-Croe Wing Gundam Ver.te by Tekka-Croe
So I've finally convinced myself to watch Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, since it seems to be one of the all-time fan favorite series. It's alright, I guess. I don't really understand the appeal of it, though. It's like watching Mobile Suit Gundam: The Geopolitical Soap Opera. I get that it was meant to have a greater focus on character drama in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, but could stand to have a little more interesting giant robot action.

Anyhow, this here's my redesign of Kunio Okawara's classic Wing Gundam. I suppose it could be thought of as an alternative to Hajime Katoki's redesign (While the Ver.Ka is a beautiful illustration, it's got too much "Wing Gundam Zero" and not enough plain old "Wing Gundam").

I've made a few small changes to the design, most notably the golden bird-mode claws folded on the forearms. I've moved them from the center of the arm to the sides, as the original positioning was a little awkward, and would interfere with the articulation of the arm (can be seen here: [link] ). Aside from that, I just took away a little bit of color here and there.

So yeah, this is for all you Wing fans out there. Cheers.

EDIT 10/28/12 It's come to my attention that my previous computer's monitor settings were somewhat skewed, causing yellow colors to have a pale, sickly hue. I've since corrected this to have the more golden yellow that I intended.

well I've always been more of a fan of the UC ara but not to say I don't dislike gundam wing's mobile suit designs and this one is quite a awesome revision.

I can see what you mean about the wing kai that katoki did, yours on the other hand finds a nice middle ground with keeping the basic shape but streamlining and refining it while your at it.

The detail on the joint areas are top notch as well as the coloring, which is both simple and eye pleasing :)

great work :)

I really hated taht Heero treated the Wing Gundam like complete crap, in my opinion. I mean, really, the poor thing got butchered over and over in the series. Self-detonation, dumped in the ocean twice, ripped apart by mobile dolls, and almost completely, if not completely destroyed by Libra. I mean, come one. That was my favorite of the whole show, aside from the Wing Zero. I only liked the Wing Zero because the damn thing was practically alive.

Aside from Wing, I find myself leaning towards the 08th (especially the 08th, loved the realism), 0083, SEED (the Strike and the Freedom are awesome), Unicorn, and 00. I adore the original Gundam since, well, it was the first. Back to the 08th, I could actually see myself piloting a (G) type Gundam with ease, after an ass load of training mind you. Oh, and the Gouf Custom solidified my fear of any Gouf model in any Gundam game. I try to never get anywhere close to it because I know that it can rip my shit if it wanted to.

Both designs combined... very tasty... :D

At least you did away with the curved-up intakes from the Okawara version, and then made it straight; made it look more buff... :D

I really do love this design, but I have to say the white v-fin bugs me >.> ...I would however agree that Wing Ver. Ka looks too much like Wing Zero, but all the wing ver. kas look similar to their upgraded forms

The white crest is just a personal thing. I've never really liked the now-standard red-crest-with-gold-fins look. Because the head is usually white, the colorful crest looks disconnected. By making the fins white, they are distinctly attached to the head.

Or maybe I'm just over-analyzing this.

Makes sense and it does look more attached to the head. But I still prefer the v-fin being colored differently. Makes it stand out more and since it's one of the main points that distinguish gundams from mobile suits. Either way, it's your design and I love it either way.

That awesome. I remember growing up with Wing. It was pretty good, but never did understand the massive hype people gave it. Seen Endless Waltz yet?

Cool, I sorta followed Katoki on my re-do just because I like his proportions and the "sleekness" I guess. It's a very nice re-do regardless and I especially like how you did the upper legs.

Yeah it's kind of sad that it's what most people associate Gundam with. I was always more of a fan of the first war and for sure Char's Counter Attack. Gundam Zeta was pretty cool as well and I always dug the mech designs in 0083 and MS 8th, but wing is the most popular. I liked Endless Waltz because at least the mech designs were refined and it was mercifully short compared to a 70 eps long Geopolitical Soap Opera as you put it.

The series nobody talks about is Turn A Gundam which I thought was really cool. The first time they let an american design the Gundam and other mechs let alone is one of the finest designers and a Colorado native Syd Mead! It was one of the most controversial Gundam Designs ever but I always felt it was the most elegant and well. I still want to do a fan painting of it. Maybe in a week or two after this Comic Fest thing....

Cool, I didn't know Syd Mead was from Colorado. And yeah, I've never been too fond of the Gundams from Wing. They just seem a little too... goofy for my tastes. I think it was the whole "themed" aspect, like how one's the Grim Reaper, and another's a tank, and there's also one that looks like it's wearing traditional Chinese armor.

Also yeah, Turn A has some really sweet designs, both in the mobile suit and character departments.

Wing Gundam was my first Gundam model and probably my favorite. I can verify your concerns regarding the gold claws - they definitely interfered with arm articulation. I personally would do away with them or make them more functional - the "transforming into a bird" feature always seemed really unnecessary to me. I much prefer the simple jetpack layout to giant robotic birds. Gundam =/= Zoids.

Hey, awesome! My first Gundam model was the 1/100th scale Wing Gundam (the old one with shine gold pieces). Of course I was, like, 10 at the time and so I absolutely butchered it. And yeah, the Bird Mode thing is kinda weird, but I figured I'd leave it be, as it is, if nothing else, a neat gimmick.

Yeah, wing gundam caught my eye as a kid because it resembled this fellow on the left, from the now ancient RTS "Metal Fatigue" - one of my all-time favorite games and a must-play for fans of giant robot combat.

The bird claws are apparently meant to hold the Buster Rifle in place when in use in Mobile Suit mode. The Katoki version somewhat capitalizes on this.

huh. on my model they didn't serve any useful purpose at all. That might just be a symptom of replica quality, tho, as I couldn't afford the good models with 1,000 joints and all that.

Wing was my first series. the only thing I understood about it as a child was that "Gundams are superior weapons". About 10 years later, I decided to rewatch it again to gain a better understanding of the show's plot. Overall, the reason why it's so politically character driven is because they were trying to appeal to the female audience (for some reason), while still providing some interesting points for the males.

If you want some raw mecha action, you should watch Endless Waltz. It's the OVA Sequel to the TV Series. The After Colony Universe is a good one, if you're more of a politics oriented person.

Which I'm not. Still my favorite of the Gundam AUs though.

In any case, this is a beautiful redesign you made.

Yeeesss...I've always had the sneaking suspision that Wing was meant more for those fangirls out there rather than the hardcore mecha action. That explains why there's more fan art of the pilots instead of the Mobile Suits. :P

When Endless Waltz rolled around you'd suddenly see a lot more of the mecha, too. Which isn't a bad thing. Endless Waltz's mechanical design was pretty fetching.
