Test Panel: Deflect! by Tekka-Croe Test Panel: Deflect! by Tekka-Croe
I'm very tentatively considering working on a Novus Imperium comic. My friends and I have compiled so frigging much information and concepts for the universe of NI, and I think it's time I started actually getting some of it down on paper.

This is just me doing a quick test for a manga-ish approach for the visual style. I'm a little iffy on using dot-tone for this, since I would likely be publishing it here (or on a separate blog) digitally, and because of the limitations of pixels, dot-tones don't always work well on computer screens.

Also: Say hello to Karic's "Golem" hardsuit. I'm still working out the little details of the design, so what you're seeing here isn't finalized (however, the head typifies the look of helmets for all of Karic's military powered armor).

Why do mangas allways have that dot shading anyway?

It'because when printing manga on paper, it's far more cost-effective to use dot-tones to achieve shades of gray.  It just lets you achieve the illusion of a gray tone while still only printing with black ink.

Nice movement. Like Narric-80 says, it's a little detailed filled, making an initial read difficult. Because of that, it reminds me of some of the panels from Masamune Shirow. Great work!

Masamune Shirow's work (particularly Appleseed) has been a pretty huge influence on how I handle comic/manga stuff.

Most mangas are printed on paper. Dot shading saves ink.

Reminds me a bit of Appleseed by Masamune Shirow... Which is high praise.

Thanks, man.

Appleseed is easily my favorite manga (and very possibly my favorite comic/graphic novel, period). I'm glad that the influence shows through.

To be honest if it were a graphic novel I'd but it, were it a webcomic, I'd read it. Were it a game I'd damn well play it.

I would read this manga. That being said I don't read manga at all. However looking at the characters and interesting designs, it takes me back to days I wanted to do what you're creating. I'm glad someone out there is creating a similar universe (even better!)

This is pretty damn cool overall and this style would appear to lend itself very well to your Mecha/Character designs as well.
As has been said above, Go for it!
I for one await to see what you do with this Comic, if anything, with baited breath.

I can't quite parse the head on the armor suit. I can't rotate it in my mind's eye and have it make sense, if you can understand that at all. The tones came out pretty good, professional, considering the limitations of screen display, even with the DevArt shrinkage before full-view. Also think you need a few more speed lines too. You did have me for a moment with "Oh hey, it's my fav manga Battle Angel Al-wait a minute...."

I would definately subscribe to such a webcomic and recommend it to those I know!

the helmat look a little off to me, a little more rounded version might make it fit better i think. other then that, this looks rather awesome, should definantly make it a manga :P

A well made panel. I agree with Narric-SBO above me in that you'll probably be better off using gradients as opposed to dot-tones, but if you ever decide to go to Kickstarter with this, you'll have my money. :)

Yeah the Half tones are really more for printing. If you're looking to go with printing your comic then it offers some advantages in terms of cost. That's a big reason why I do it as I'm an independent comic artist. I also just prefer the look of it to color comic, but that's just me. I grew up reading GITS, Appleseed, Akira, so I really got hooked on the look of Black and White half toned art. The only other problem I could see for you if you do do the half toned look is that it is going to limit your appeal for readership. Most people just expect color in their comics, and it's sad that most American readers aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate the Black and White look. It's just a danger you will face with the style.

Either way I really like how it came out so I guess what I'm saying is do color if it's going to be a digital comic, if not then do B&W. Are you doing it all on your own? Cause yeah coloring along with the rest of it will be a pain. lol

Dot-tones do work well in printed Manga, but for digital-exclusive work, you probably would be best going with Gradients.

That aside, I really like the piece. Despite the size of the pic, I can tell there is a distinct size difference between the combatants, making the scene seem tense.

I like the design of the golem suit, but the helmet kind of sees to "melt" into the lines of the chaacters left shoulder armour. Maybe that could have been avoided if the golem was facing the (wo)man, sort of keeping eye-contact or something. Just my thoughts.

I see what you're saying about the head and shoulder. I probably could've added a bit more hatching around the jaw to more clearly delineate the separation.

I've been looking at some of my favorite sci-fi mangas (Shirow Masamune's Appleseed, Tsutomu Nihei's Biomega) for inspiration with the style, hence the use of dot-tone.

Anyhow, glad to get some feedback. I've never done anything quite like this (I'm usually better for doing reference images), so I'm always open for criticism.

My suggestion for the head/shoulder issue, is maybe just adding a thicker outline around the helmet to show that it is separate? Otherwise this was definitely an eye catching piece in my feed, and I would love to see more.
